Nearly one year after its launch, Lahore’s much-hyped Route 47 solar road has not produced even one unit of electricity. The project, developed by the Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (CBD Punjab), was promoted as Pakistan’s first electricity-generating smart road. It aimed to use solar panels along the 4.5 km route to create clean energy for urban use.
When announced, the project raised high hopes for renewable energy and modern infrastructure. Officials described it as a step toward green development in Lahore. However, reports show that no solar panels have been installed so far. The electricity generation part of the project remains completely non-operational.
Progress has been limited to planning, approvals, technical studies, and administrative work. The road itself may be complete in some parts, but the key solar feature that made it special is still missing.
This delay has disappointed many who expected quick results in clean energy. Experts say such projects need better coordination between departments, faster procurement, and clear timelines to succeed.
Route 47 was meant to serve as a model for other cities. Its current situation highlights the challenges of turning big ideas into reality in Pakistan’s infrastructure sector. Authorities have not shared a clear new timeline for installing the solar panels.
