The government has reportedly put the proposed rebranding of the merged Ufone-Telenor company on hold due to legal and corporate governance concerns. The company was expected to adopt the new brand name “e&,” but officials have decided to pause the process until all legal matters are reviewed.
According to reports, the proposal to change the company’s name was approved by the Ufone board. However, questions were raised because the PTCL board had previously delayed making a decision on the same proposal.
Authorities are now examining whether the Ufone board had the legal authority to approve the new brand identity before all merger requirements and formalities were fully completed.
Officials are also reviewing whether the approval process followed the correct legal and corporate procedures. The purpose of the review is to ensure that all decisions related to the merger and the company’s future identity comply with applicable laws and governance standards.
Another issue being discussed is the proposed removal of the word “Pakistan” from the telecom company’s identity. Some stakeholders have expressed concerns that changing the name could affect the company’s national identity and public image. These concerns are also expected to be considered during the legal review.
The government has not yet made a final decision on the proposed rebranding. Officials said the matter will remain under review until all legal questions have been addressed and the necessary procedures have been completed.
For now, the merged telecom company will continue operating under its existing arrangements.
