Toyota is reportedly preparing a major update for the next-generation Corolla, with hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and fully electric versions expected to join the lineup.
Recent reports say the new Corolla could arrive as early as 2027. Toyota showed a Corolla Concept at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, giving an early look at the design direction of the next model. The company has also been developing a new 1.5-liter engine and hybrid system for future vehicles.
The upcoming Corolla is expected to follow Toyota’s multi-pathway strategy, offering different powertrains for different markets. Alongside the existing petrol and hybrid options, a PHEV could provide longer electric-only driving before switching to petrol. A battery-electric Corolla is also reportedly under development.
Reports suggest the hybrid system could improve fuel economy by around 10 to 20 percent compared with the current setup. However, Toyota has not yet announced final specifications, prices or launch dates for the PHEV and electric Corolla.
The next-generation model is expected to use an updated platform designed to support multiple powertrain types.
