Pakistan Plans New Gemstone Centre in Islamabad

Pakistan is planning to establish a modern gemstone centre in Islamabad to improve local processing and increase exports from the country’s gemstone sector. Adviser to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan announced the plan after chairing a high-level meeting on October 2.

The proposed facility will include modern equipment for cutting, polishing and processing gemstones, along with exhibition facilities. The government says the centre will help improve the quality and market value of Pakistani gemstones and support their sale in international markets.

The project is part of wider government efforts to develop the sector under the National Policy to Realize Pakistan’s Gemstone Potential 2026 to 2030, approved by the Economic Coordination Committee in May. The policy focuses on modern mining, value addition and higher exports.

A government tender also shows plans for an International Gemstone Centre on Constitution Avenue. The facility is planned as a one-window setup with gemstone identification, testing, retail, display, marketing and other business services.

Officials say better technology and local processing could reduce losses and allow Pakistan to earn more from its natural gemstone resources.
