President Asif Ali Zardari is expected to confer Pakistan’s Nishan-e-Imtiaz on United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during his ongoing visit to the country.
Reports say President Zardari will present the prestigious civilian award to the UN chief at a ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr. The honour is expected to recognize Guterres’s contribution to international peace, development and multilateral cooperation.
Guterres arrived in Islamabad on October 6 for an official visit that will continue until October 8. He is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. During his stay, he is scheduled to meet President Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.
The UN chief will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) and attend a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority.
The Foreign Office said the visit will highlight Pakistan’s cooperation with the United Nations and its support for multilateralism, peace and international security.
