Punjab is looking to significantly expand its trade with Saudi Arabia after Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz met with the newly appointed Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Rajih Al-Baqmi, according to media reports.
During the meeting, the chief minister welcomed the ambassador and congratulated him on taking charge of his diplomatic responsibilities. She also expressed appreciation to the Saudi leadership for its continued economic and financial assistance to Pakistan.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Punjab and Saudi Arabia, particularly in the area of trade. Punjab has set an ambitious target of exporting more than Rs500 billion worth of products to the Saudi market.
The proposed export expansion will cover a range of agricultural and livestock products. These include livestock, beef, poultry, mangoes, potatoes and shrimp. The plan reflects Punjab’s efforts to increase its share in the Saudi market by promoting locally produced goods.
CM Maryam also highlighted the strong relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. She said the Saudi leadership, particularly the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, along with the people of Saudi Arabia, has a special place in the hearts of Pakistanis.
She described the relationship between the two countries as being rooted in longstanding historical, religious and cultural connections.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss future cooperation and ways to further develop bilateral economic ties. Punjab’s proposed export target could create new opportunities for farmers, livestock producers, food businesses and exporters if trade links are expanded.
The discussions come as Pakistan continues to seek stronger economic partnerships with Saudi Arabia and greater access for its products in international markets.
