Pakistanis Pay Rs. 1.4 Billion Extra for LPG Amid Overcharging in Five Days

Consumers across Pakistan have reportedly faced an additional financial burden of more than Rs1.4 billion in just five days as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) continues to be sold well above the official price.

The commodity is currently available in the market at around Rs600 to Rs625 per kilogram, while the price notified by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) stands at Rs280 per kilogram. The large gap has raised concerns among consumers and industry representatives over unchecked overcharging.

LPG Distributors Association Chairman Irfan Khokhar has blamed widespread violations for the extra cost being passed on to customers. He said the difference between the regulated rate and market prices has resulted in substantial losses for consumers within a short period.

Importers, however, have linked the price increase to supply-related difficulties. They pointed to the closure of the Taftan border as one factor affecting LPG availability, while higher transportation expenses have added further pressure on prices.

Despite the sharp difference between the official and market rates, OGRA has reportedly not yet launched enforcement action against LPG plants or marketing companies. The lack of action has added to concerns about the growing price gap.

Retailers say they are also struggling to operate under the current conditions. Shopkeepers argue that wholesale LPG prices are already too high for them to sell at the official rate. They have warned that repeated penalties could make it impossible for some businesses to remain open.

The situation has left consumers paying significantly more for an essential household fuel, increasing pressure for authorities to address both supply problems and alleged overcharging in the market.
