The government has agreed not to cut it down to accommodate the development of the Rawalpindi Ring Road, following a campaign against cutting down a 100-year-old banyan tree. Consequently, an additional Rs. 100 million to be allocated to the project to improve the road design and save the tree has been approved by the government.
To buy more land for the project, he also approved an additional Rs. 100 million. The engineers will therefore, rebuild the road and the project will be carried out without the banyan tree being destroyed.
While the Rawalpindi Ring Road Project will cut a total of 6,500 trees, the government has ensured that 30,000 additional trees will be planted as replacements.
Previously, the overall cost of the project was estimated at Rs. 50 billion, and an additional amount of Rs. 6.77 billion was set aside for the beautification of roadside tracts. In order to make the project more environmentally friendly, landscapes, lakes and waterfalls will also be created next to the new route.
