After President Joe Biden’s administration freed and split $7 billion between humanitarian relief for Afghanistan and a fund for September 11 victims, Pakistan has now requested for all of Afghanistan’s assets to be returned.

Asim Iftikhar, spokesperson for the Foreign Office, said in a statement that Pakistan had seen the US decision to unfreeze Afghan assets held by US banks in order to release $3.5 billion for humanitarian help in Afghanistan and $3.5 billion for compensation to 9/11 victims’ families.

“Over the past several months, Pakistan has consistently emphasized the need for the international community to quickly act to address the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan and to help revive the Afghan economy, as the two are inextricably linked,” he said in response to media questions.

He added, “Finding wats to unfreeze the Afghan foreign reserves as soon as possible will help meet the Afghan people’s humanitarian and economic demands.”

According to him, Pakistan’s principle position on the frozen Afghan foreign bank reserves is that they belong to the Afghan nation and should be released.
