When the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) designated the markhor, or wild goat, as an endangered species in Pakistan, the administration of the northwestern province worked hard to conserve its population, which has more than doubled in the last three decades.
On Thursday, as the world observed World Wildlife Day, the local community held workshops and seminars to promote awareness about the importance of safeguarding markhor. They promised to keep the animal safe from unlawful hunting and to collaborate with the authorities to safeguard wildlife.
Pakistan is well-known for its markhor, which is distinguished by its agile and sure-footed characteristics, as well as its long winter coat and gigantic spiral horns that can grow to be more than 1.5m (150 inches) long on males.
