According to a new Gallup poll, at least 40% of the country’s companies pay bribes to government officials in order to get their legal work done.
Gallup Pakistan’s Business Confidence Index released the results of the survey, which included responses from over 400 companies across a variety of industries.
When asked whether they were pressured to pay a bribe to get government officials to do legitimate work, 40% of business owners said they were, while 60% said they declined to pay bribes to get their work done.
A breakdown of the companies by sector revealed that 56 percent of businessmen in the manufacturing sector, 40 percent in the services sector, and 39 percent in the trading sector paid bribes.
In the provinces, 50% of businessmen in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan said they paid bribes for legitimate work, while 43% of Punjab businesses and 31% of Sindh businesses said they paid bribes.
