Above 2,000 People Died in Powerful Earthquakes in Afghanistan

On Saturday, a devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake rocked northwestern Afghanistan, resulting in a tragic loss of approximately 2,000 lives and leaving around 600 individuals injured. The earthquake’s epicenter was pinpointed by the US Geological Survey in the Zinda Jan District of Herat Province in Afghanistan, occurring at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

This seismic event was followed by several aftershocks, including magnitudes of 4.6, 6.3, 5.8, and 5.9, as reported by international media outlets. The tremors extended beyond Afghanistan’s borders, affecting neighboring regions in Iran and Turkmenistan, underscoring the seismic intensity of the event.

The widespread destruction and high casualty count were primarily attributed to landslides and building collapses triggered by the earthquake’s violent shaking. As rescue efforts continue, there remains a deep concern among officials that the number of fatalities may rise significantly. Many people are still trapped beneath layers of mudslides and debris, making rescue operations challenging and time-sensitive.

The humanitarian response to this tragic disaster is of paramount importance. International aid organizations, neighboring countries, and the Afghan government are mobilizing resources and personnel to provide immediate relief and support to those affected. Efforts are focused on rescuing survivors, providing medical care, and addressing the urgent needs of displaced communities, including shelter, food, and clean water. This devastating earthquake serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerability of regions prone to seismic activity and underscores the necessity for preparedness and resilience in the face of such natural disasters.
