The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has deregistered four political parties, including Waqar Zaka’s Technology Movement Pakistan, for failing to comply with mandatory legal and electoral requirements.
According to the ECP, the affected parties did not fulfill several statutory obligations, including conducting intra-party elections within the required timeframe, submitting annual financial statements, and meeting other compliance standards set under Pakistan’s electoral laws. As a result of the decision, the total number of registered political parties in the country has decreased to 164.
The Commission emphasized that all political parties are legally required to maintain transparency, hold regular internal elections, and submit financial disclosures to remain registered. It reiterated that compliance with these regulations is essential to ensure accountability, democratic governance, and the integrity of Pakistan’s political system.
The deregistration reflects the ECP’s continued efforts to strengthen the country’s electoral framework by enforcing existing laws and ensuring that all political parties operate in accordance with the legal standards established for political organizations. Parties that fail to meet these obligations may face similar action in the future as the Commission continues its oversight of the electoral process.
