Pakistan Set Unwanted Record in World Cup History Against Sri Lanka

In the intense eighth match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, the Pakistani bowlers faced a daunting challenge against the formidable Sri Lankan batting lineup, ultimately conceding a staggering 344 runs. Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama exhibited exceptional prowess, propelling Sri Lanka to this imposing total. This performance marked a significant milestone, making Sri Lanka the first team to score the highest runs against Pakistan in a World Cup innings, surpassing India’s 336 runs in the 2019 World Cup.

Despite an early wicket loss, the Sri Lankan batsmen displayed resilience. Opener Pathum Nissanka showcased a formidable half-century, laying a strong foundation. However, it was Mendis and Samarawickrama who truly stole the show, elevating Sri Lanka’s innings to another level with their exceptional batting display. Mendis particularly posed a significant challenge for the struggling Pakistani bowling, accumulating an impressive 122 runs off just 77 deliveries, including a barrage of boundaries.

In response, Hasan Ali emerged as a standout performer for Pakistan with the ball, despite being the costliest bowler, claiming four crucial wickets. However, the enormity of the target looms large for Pakistan, as they face the challenge of chasing down a target greater than 265 runs in their World Cup history, setting the stage for a thrilling contest in their pursuit of victory.
