World’s First 100% Battery-Powered Electric Heavy-Load Locomotive is Ready for the Railway Tracks

Roy Hill, an iron ore mining company in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, is pioneering a groundbreaking initiative by introducing the FLXdrive locomotive with a substantial battery capacity of up to 7 megawatt hours (MWh). To put this into perspective, 1 MWh can power an American household for over a month or enable an electric vehicle to travel approximately 3,600 miles, emphasizing the locomotive’s remarkable energy storage capability.

What sets the FLXdrive locomotive apart, besides its impressive power capacity, is its distinctive pink color, symbolizing Roy Hill’s support for breast cancer research. This not only highlights the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility but also draws attention to the innovative approach to sustainable mining.

While being constructed by Wabtec, the FLXdrive locomotive is set to undergo further testing in 2024 before being transported to Australia. The locomotive boasts six axles, a CoCo wheel arrangement, and 3.2 MW of traction power, with the possibility of expanding its battery capacity to 8 MWh, as per Wabtec’s specifications.

Notably, Roy Hill’s approach combines this electric locomotive with a diesel locomotive, creating a hybrid configuration. This hybrid setup is expected to bring about a substantial reduction in both fuel costs and emissions, with a double-digit percentage decrease in these areas. This forward-thinking strategy aligns with the global shift towards sustainable and environmentally responsible mining practices, making it a significant step in the industry’s evolution. Roy Hill’s adoption of innovative technologies, like the FLXdrive, showcases their commitment to reducing their environmental footprint and promoting a more sustainable future for mining operations.
