Following a recent Supreme Court order on former prime minister Imran Khan’s medical care, three inmates at Adiala Jail have filed petitions in the Islamabad High Court. They seek permission for treatment at private hospitals and access to doctors of their choice.
The prisoners reportedly named as Ilyas Khan, Ismail Khan and Owais Altaf, cited the court precedent set in Khan’s case. Justice Muhammad Asif issued notices to the Adiala Jail superintendent on 24 August 2026 and directed a detailed reply by 27 August.
Ismail Khan suffers from haemophilia, a condition that causes prolonged bleeding. His lawyer told the court he had been taken to hospital ten times in the past two months without improvement. The counsel said that the required treatment is available in Pakistan only at Shifa International Hospital.
Owais Altaf is reported to have fever and a heart condition. His lawyer argued that proper medical care is a basic right of every prisoner and requested a shift from a government facility to Shifa.
Lawyers said that when specialised treatment is unavailable in government hospitals, prisoners may be moved to private ones at their families’ expense, following the Supreme Court guidance. The court will examine these requests in the coming days.
