AI Eating Jobs? BMW Set to Lay Off 8,000 Employees from Management Roles

is planning to expand the use of artificial intelligence across its operations as it looks for ways to improve efficiency and reduce costs, with around 8,000 management positions potentially affected by planned workforce changes by next year.

The proposed reductions would represent roughly one-fifth of the company’s management positions. The move comes as BMW faces increasingly challenging conditions in the automotive market and seeks to streamline its operations.

The automaker plans to increase AI integration across several areas of its business, including vehicle development, materials purchasing, sales and marketing, and aftersales services.

The technology is expected to support employees by automating certain processes, improving workflows and helping teams complete tasks more efficiently.

BMW also expects greater use of AI to accelerate development and contribute to cost-saving efforts. The planned changes highlight how major automobile manufacturers are increasingly exploring artificial intelligence not only for vehicles and production, but also for corporate operations and workforce management.
