The Government of Pakistan has blocked access to the Al Jazeera English website, citing concerns over its coverage of the ongoing elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The decision was announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during the second phase of the election process.
According to the ministry, Al Jazeera English’s reporting focused on selected polling stations and did not present what it considered a complete picture of the elections. Officials claimed that the coverage highlighted only certain incidents, which they said created a misleading impression of the overall electoral process.
The ministry also stated that the broadcaster’s reporting could affect public confidence in the elections. It described the coverage as “yellow journalism” and said it did not fairly represent the voting process taking place across the region.
The decision comes while voting continues in the second phase of the AJK elections. Polling is being held in several constituencies, although voting in some areas has been postponed because of adverse weather conditions. Election authorities are expected to announce revised polling dates for the affected constituencies.
Officials said the government remains committed to ensuring that the election process is completed in an orderly and transparent manner. They added that security and administrative arrangements have been made to help voters cast their ballots safely.
The blocking of the website has drawn attention to the ongoing debate over media coverage and the reporting of elections.
