Appeal Seeking Review of May 14 General Elections, Hearing Adjourned

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Muneeb Akhtar heard the case.

The hearing on the Election Commission’s review petition on the order to hold the general elections on May 14 has been adjourned till Tuesday next week.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice remarked that the court has to see not only the constitution but also the situation.

The way Imran Khan was arrested, there was fear, arrests are going on, the date could not be agreed. Ali Zafar said that the entire leadership of PTI is under arrest, what talks can be held in such an environment? Now we don’t want talks, only the implementation of the constitution.

During the hearing, Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial remarked that earlier the Election Commission’s position was that the elections would be held with resources, but now the Election Commission has opened pandora’s box. It would be appropriate to let someone else raise these points. There are good points in the Election Commission’s application.

The Chief Justice said that dialogue between the government and the opposition is the main thing, the ball is now in the court of the government and the opposition, prepare by next week, what is happening outside is also watched, so do not want to keep a quick hearing. The court gives relief only after seeing the conduct of the parties, the Supreme Court is there to defend the rights of the people.
