Australia Launches New ‘Skills in Demand’ Visa, Here’re Details

Australia has launched a new visa program to attract skilled workers across critical industries. Known as the Skills in Demand (SID) visa, it replaces the previous Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa and offers updated pathways for professionals to live and work in the country.

The SID visa provides three distinct streams:

  1. Specialist Skills Pathway – Aimed at top-tier professionals to drive innovation and economic growth.
  2. Core Skills Pathway – Focused on addressing workforce needs in priority sectors.
  3. Essential Skills Pathway – Designed for industry-specific agreements, with further details yet to be announced.

To simplify the process, Australia’s Department of Home Affairs has reduced the work experience requirement for the SID visa to just one year, making it easier for skilled workers to apply for permanent residency. Applicants must also meet specific English language requirements.

The government has introduced a Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), featuring over 450 jobs across industries such as healthcare, construction, and technology.

Salary thresholds for the SID visa range from AUD 70,000 to AUD 135,000. Professionals earning more than AUD 135,000 may qualify for the Specialist Skills Pathway.

This updated program reflects Australia’s efforts to fill critical skill gaps and support its economic growth by bringing in qualified professionals from around the world. Officials have stated that further updates will be shared in the coming weeks.
