Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand has arrived in Pakistan for the first official visit by a Canadian foreign minister in nearly 20 years. This important trip shows renewed interest in strengthening ties between the two countries. Anand came at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
During her stay, Anand held productive talks with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The leaders discussed ways to increase cooperation in many areas, including trade, investment, agriculture, energy, mining, education, and people-to-people links. Both sides agreed to hold regular meetings to keep the dialogue going.
A key outcome of the visit was the signing of a protocol on canola imports. This will help Pakistan bring in Canadian canola under new safety rules. The two countries also recognized the large Pakistani-Canadian community of around 300,000 people as a strong bridge between nations.
The visit builds on recent efforts, including a 2025 joint statement. It highlights Pakistan’s and Canada’s shared goal of deeper economic partnership. This high-level engagement is expected to open new doors for business and collaboration, benefiting both countries in the long run.
