CM Punjab Launches Electric Buses in Punjab With Rs. 20 Fare & Free Travel for Students

The Punjab government has expanded its Green Bus Service to six more districts, bringing environmentally friendly public transportation to Attock, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Khanewal, and Khushab.

The initiative marks another step in the province’s efforts to improve urban mobility by introducing modern electric buses equipped with air conditioning and passenger-friendly facilities. Authorities believe the expansion will provide residents with a safer, more comfortable, and reliable mode of transport while supporting the province’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable public transit.

To keep the service affordable, the fare has been fixed at just Rs. 20 per ride, making it accessible to a wide range of commuters. Officials say the project is expected to particularly benefit women, students, senior citizens, and daily wage workers by offering convenient and cost-effective travel.

In addition to improving transportation, the electric bus fleet is intended to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and lower dependence on conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

The provincial government has also unveiled an ambitious long-term expansion plan for the Green Bus Service. Under the roadmap, around 1,100 electric buses are expected to be added to the fleet during the current year, with the total number projected to increase to nearly 5,000 over the next three years.

The network will gradually be extended beyond major cities to tehsil-level areas, aiming to create a modern, province-wide public transport system that connects more communities while promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible travel.
