Diver Captures Stunning Footage of One of World’s Rarest Oarfish

Divers had a remarkable discovery off the northeast coast of Taiwan when they found an enormous deep sea oarfish. The creature was over six feet long and had large bite marks on its body.

Oarfish usually live deep in the ocean, around 200 to 1,000 meters below the surface, so it’s not common to see them. In Japanese folklore, oarfish are believed to be messengers from the Sea God’s Palace and are seen as a sign of possible natural disasters like tsunamis or earthquakes. However, scientists say there is no evidence to support this belief.

Oarfish can grow to more than 50 feet, making them the longest bony fish in the world. They are likely responsible for sea serpent legends that have been told throughout history. Despite the legends, oarfish are not dangerous to humans and prefer to stay in the deep parts of the ocean.
