The Pentagon has released detailed information about President Donald Trump’s proposed defence budget for fiscal year 2027, which totals approximately $1.5 trillion. According to reports from Reuters, this represents the largest year-on-year increase in defence spending since the end of the Second World War.
The budget introduces a series of “presidential priorities” focused on modernising the United States military and strengthening its technological and industrial capabilities. Key areas of investment include advanced missile defence systems, expanded drone warfare capabilities, artificial intelligence integration, enhanced data infrastructure, and the revitalisation of the domestic defence industrial base.
A major component of the plan is shipbuilding, which has been allocated more than $65 billion. This funding will be used to construct 18 new warships along with 16 additional support vessels. The contracts are expected to be awarded to leading defence contractors, including General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls Industries. This large-scale naval expansion is being described as part of a broader “Golden Fleet” initiative aimed at strengthening maritime dominance.
Officials have noted that this level of naval procurement is the most significant since 1962, reflecting a renewed emphasis on expanding and modernising the US Navy’s operational capacity. The overall strategy is presented as a long-term effort to maintain military superiority, enhance readiness, and integrate emerging technologies into defence operations.
