A former pilot associated with Air Canada has been arrested in Canada after investigators alleged that he operated more than 900 domestic and international flights over a period of nearly 16 years without possessing the required Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL). Authorities claim the individual relied on forged or fraudulent credentials while working as a captain between 2009 and 2025, raising serious concerns about aviation oversight and licensing verification procedures.
The alleged scheme was uncovered during a routine review of pilot qualifications, when officials reportedly identified discrepancies and irregularities in the pilot’s licensing records. Following the discovery, law enforcement agencies launched an investigation and filed multiple fraud-related charges. Air Canada stated that the pilot was immediately removed from operational duties and the matter was reported to the appropriate aviation regulators for further action.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, the airline emphasized that there is no indication that passenger safety was compromised during the pilot’s tenure. According to the company, the individual successfully completed all mandatory training programs, simulator evaluations, medical examinations, and competency assessments required throughout his career. Investigators have named the inquiry “Project Icarus” and continue to examine how the alleged deception remained undetected for so many years, while also reviewing whether any weaknesses in verification systems contributed to the situation.
