FIFA Bans Refillable Water Bottles At 2026 World Cup Stadiums Over Safety Concerns

FIFA has introduced a new rule banning fans from bringing reusable water bottles into stadiums for the 2026 World Cup. This last-minute change was announced on June 2, 2026, and has surprised many supporters.

Earlier, FIFA had allowed empty, transparent reusable plastic bottles up to one litre so fans could refill them at water stations. However, the updated stadium code of conduct now clearly states: “For the avoidance of doubt, reusable water bottles may not be brought into the stadium.” The ban applies to all 16 host venues across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

FIFA says the decision is for safety reasons. Officials fear that bottles could be thrown and cause injuries to players or other fans. Many North American stadiums already follow similar rules, so FIFA decided to make the policy the same everywhere.

Fans will now have to buy bottled water inside the stadiums or use hydration stations. This has caused anger because the World Cup will take place in the summer, when temperatures can be very high. Critics worry that people, especially in hot cities like Miami or Dallas, may struggle to stay hydrated and will have to pay high prices for water.

FIFA has promised enough water stations, misting fans, and cooling areas. However, many supporters call the ban unfair and say it puts profit before people’s comfort. The 2026 World Cup starts on June 11.
