From Barren Land to Vineyards: 20 Years of Transformation

Same place, two decades apart. What a remarkable transformation!

At the foot of the Helan Mountains in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, what was once a barren landscape scarred by sand and gravel mining has been transformed into a green and productive estate.

The transformation did not happen overnight. Through years of soil improvement, tree planting, irrigation development and ecological restoration, Zhihui Yuanshi Winery has brought new life to once-degraded land.

Today, the area is home to vineyards, trees and a thriving local industry.

For countries like Pakistan, where desertification and land degradation pose serious challenges, this story offers valuable food for thought.

While different regions require different solutions, China’s experience shows how long-term investment in land restoration, water management and suitable crops can help turn degraded land into productive landscapes.

The lesson goes far beyond grapes or wine: with the right approach, even difficult land can be given a new lease of life.
