The National Assembly Secretariat has introduced new fuel conservation and cost-cutting measures, under which half of its staff will work from home on a rotational basis. The decision was announced on September 22, 2026, and will remain in place until further orders.
Under the new arrangement, 50% of employees will continue working from their offices, while the remaining 50% will perform their duties remotely. Each department will prepare rotational duty schedules, which will be approved by the relevant authorities.
The move is part of wider efforts to reduce fuel use and government expenses. Similar work-from-home measures were introduced across government offices earlier this year during a period of pressure on fuel supplies and energy costs. The federal government had allowed up to 50% of staff to work remotely, while essential services were excluded.
The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics has noted that remote work can reduce commuting and office energy costs, although the actual savings depend on how widely and effectively the policy is implemented.
The National Assembly Secretariat said the latest measures will continue until further orders, with departments responsible for managing staff rotations.
