Gen Z and Millennials Account for Over 80% of New Stock Market Investors in Pakistan

Gen Z and millennials now represent more than 80 percent of new investors entering Pakistan’s stock market, highlighting growing interest among younger people in digital investment opportunities.

Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) Chief Executive Farrukh Sabzwari said younger investors are familiar with digital platforms and expect convenience when accessing financial services. Their increasing participation is also influencing how the stock market is adapting to changing investor preferences.

The number of stock market investors has increased by around 185,000 over the past six months, showing a significant rise in participation. The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has set a target of reaching 2.5 million investors as part of efforts to broaden participation in the capital market.

The growing presence of younger investors is also encouraging the stock exchange to consider changes to its existing systems and services. PSX is currently considering extending trading hours beyond 5pm, which could provide investors with additional time to access the market.

The potential change is part of wider efforts to modernise stock market operations and make investing more accessible to a broader range of people.

The increasing participation of Gen Z and millennials also reflects a shift in how younger Pakistanis engage with financial markets. With greater familiarity with online platforms and digital services, many new investors are entering the stock market through more technology-driven channels.

The rise in new investors, combined with discussions around longer trading hours, signals continued efforts to expand access to Pakistan’s capital market and encourage greater participation from individual investors.
