The government of Gilgit-Baltistan has proposed starting direct flights between Skardu and Kashgar in China. Chief Minister Amjad Hussain Azar shared this idea during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong in Islamabad.
The plan aims to make travel easier between northern Pakistan and China’s Xinjiang region. Officials believe the air link will boost tourism, trade and people-to-people contacts. Skardu is known for its stunning mountains, lakes and adventure opportunities. Direct flights would help more international visitors, especially from China, reach the area quickly.
The chief minister also suggested a visa-on-arrival facility for Chinese tourists visiting Hunza. Both proposals need approval from the federal government. During the meeting, both sides discussed cooperation in tourism, trade, energy, mining and border connectivity.
Amjad Hussain invited Chinese investors to explore opportunities in minerals, hydropower, renewable energy and tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan. He assured full support from the regional government. The Chinese ambassador welcomed the ideas and highlighted the strong potential for deeper ties between Gilgit-Baltistan and Xinjiang, especially Kashgar.
If approved, the Skardu-Kashgar route would improve regional connectivity and support economic growth. It could help position Gilgit-Baltistan as a top destination for travellers who want unique mountain experiences and cultural heritage.
