Google Launches Jaguar I-PACE: The First Electric Street View Car

Google’s first all-electric vehicle for capturing Street View has arrived. The tech giant and Jaguar Land Rover announced today that they worked together to outfit an all-electric I-Pace SUV with the necessary Street View equipment and deployed the vehicle in Dublin, Ireland.

The I-Pace will also collect more general Google Maps data and will be equipped with Aclima air quality sensors, similar to what Google has done with its Street View cars for the past decade. The I-Pace will measure nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide emissions, as well as fine particles, on a street-by-street basis in Dublin.

Jaguar Land Rover and Google have a long history together. Waymo, a sister company that began as a Google autonomous vehicle project but was spun out in 2016, uses Jaguar I-Paces in its self-driving car tests.

When asked if the company plans to use any more electric cars for Street View, a Google spokesperson said, “We’re always looking for opportunities to improve our fleet of vehicles, and there is the potential to increase our EV fleet size in the future, but no updates to share at this time.”
