Google to Boost Its AR Performance for Multi-Camera Smartphones

Using the phone’s processors, motion sensors, light sensors and cameras, Google’s ARCore Software Development Kit (SDK) allows smartphones to add virtual objects to real-life images and videos. With the rise in popularity of quad-camera phones, and ARCore’s ability to use only one of them, the feature was long overdue for an update.

This is why Google has released a new version of the ARCore SDK that allows it to use several cameras on a few different devices. The Google Play Services for AR app was modified recently to include newer functionality and availability. This included the following:

  • On compatible devices, dual camera stereo depth is available.
  • AR support has been expanded to include more applications.
  • Developers can now use new performance tracking and logging software.

There are no specifics about what improvements will be made with the addition of dual camera support, but we should know more as soon as the update is rolled out to smartphones. The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will, however, receive the update in the coming weeks, according to Google. More application support is expected to be added in the future.
