Government to Impose Tax on Cigarettes and Soft Drinks

Before the next budget, the Ministry of National Health Services will renew the case for imposing a health fee on cigarettes and sugar-sweetened drinks (SSBs).

The Ministry of Health requested that the ECC introduce a federal health contribution bill in 2021 to consolidate the law relating to the imposition and collection of taxes on the sale and use of specific commodities that hurt society and individuals.

However, the proposal was deferred due to the Technical Advisory Committee’s advice.

Furthermore, the ministry will present a case to levy a health tax of Rs. 10 per pack of 20 cigarettes and Rs. 1 every 250ml of sugar-sweetened beverages, based on the Economic Coordination Committee’s recommendation.
