Govt Plans Islamabad’s Largest 32km Commercial Corridor With Rs. 500 Billion Potential

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is preparing a major commercial development along Islamabad’s G.T. Road that could generate more than Rs. 500 billion for the civic authority.

CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf has directed the relevant departments to speed up planning and other work ahead of the project’s expected launch in the coming months. Officials have indicated that the development will be introduced in phases rather than placing the entire area on the market at once.

The project involves land acquired by the CDA in 1967. The authority holds around 3,550 kanals along a roughly 16-kilometre stretch between EME College and Nicholson Monument, with a 200-foot-wide strip on both sides of G.T. Road. After detailed planning and development, officials estimate that around 2,000 kanals could be made available for commercial use.

The CDA is also working to recover remaining portions of its land from encroachments. A significant area has already been retrieved, while further action is underway against structures and other uses occupying CDA property.

A four-member committee has also been formed to finalise the design of the proposed commercial development. The authority is assessing possible commercial activities in the area as part of the planning process.

If developed and sold according to the proposed plan, CDA officials estimate that the project could become a major source of revenue for the authority while creating additional space for businesses and investment along one of Islamabad’s key transport corridors.
