Pakistan is planning a major step to promote clean energy by removing licensing fees for rooftop solar systems up to 25 kilowatts. The Ministry of Energy is reviewing the proposal as part of initiatives to enhance the affordability and ease of installation for solar power.
At present, consumers who want to install solar panels often face extra costs and long approval processes. These include licensing charges and paperwork that can delay projects. Under the new plan, systems up to 25kW will not require licensing fees, which is expected to reduce the overall setup cost for households and small businesses.
Officials say the move is linked to Pakistan’s wider renewable energy goals supported by the Alternative Energy Development Board. The aim is to increase the share of solar energy in the country’s power mix and reduce reliance on expensive grid electricity.
As electricity prices in Pakistan have seen steady increases in recent years, many people have already started shifting to solar power to manage their monthly bills. By removing fees and simplifying approvals, the government hopes to speed up this transition.
This step can boost small-scale solar adoption and support energy independence at the household level. It is also observed that clear guidelines and appropriate system checks are essential to guarantee safety and long-term performance.
