Govt to Install 10 Million Smart Electricity Meters Across Country

Pakistan has taken a major step toward modernizing its power infrastructure by partnering with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to install 10 million smart electricity meters across the country.

Under this initiative, the IFC will support the government in strategic planning and help attract investors for the financing, installation, and long-term maintenance of the smart metering system. The project is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of the power sector by enabling real-time monitoring of electricity consumption, reducing power theft, and ensuring more accurate billing for consumers. It will also reduce the need for manual meter readings, minimizing human error and streamlining operations.

A key highlight of the project is the expected 40 percent reduction in meter-related costs, making the transition more cost-effective and sustainable. All new electricity connections will be provided with smart meters, while existing connections will be upgraded gradually in phases to ensure a smooth transition.

This initiative is seen as an important move toward improving transparency, operational efficiency, and financial stability in Pakistan’s energy sector. By adopting modern technology and encouraging investment, the country aims to build a more reliable and sustainable electricity system for the future.
