The federal government has proposed an ambitious National AI Ecosystem Development Program with an estimated cost of Rs. 283 billion, aimed at accelerating Pakistan’s progress in artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, innovation, and digital transformation. The initiative is designed to strengthen the country’s technological capabilities, support research and development, enhance digital infrastructure, and create opportunities for skill development in advanced technology sectors.
Despite the program’s large-scale vision, only Rs. 1 billion has been allocated in the FY2026-27 federal budget, representing approximately 0.35 percent of the total projected cost. According to budget documents, the initial allocation is evenly divided between local and foreign funding sources. The project is currently included in the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) under the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication but has yet to receive formal approval.
The proposed investment highlights the government’s intention to position Pakistan within the rapidly evolving global artificial intelligence landscape. While the allocated amount remains modest compared to the overall project size, it signals a commitment to laying the groundwork for future technological advancement. The initiative comes at a time when countries around the world are increasing investments in AI and digital innovation, making the development of a strong national technology ecosystem increasingly important for economic growth, competitiveness, and workforce development.
Analysts note that the limited initial funding reflects the fiscal constraints faced by the government, but the inclusion of the project in the development portfolio demonstrates a long-term policy focus on emerging technologies. If approved and implemented, the program could play a significant role in fostering innovation, supporting startups, enhancing digital skills, and preparing Pakistan for the opportunities and challenges of the AI-driven economy.
