Heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding across Istanbul, Turkey, on October 14, 2026, flooding roads, homes, shops and underpasses. The downpour disrupted daily activities and transport, leaving vehicles stranded and causing major traffic delays across the city.

According to local authorities, nearly 100 millimetres of rain fell in parts of Istanbul within 12 hours. Floodwater covered several streets, while some roads were damaged and vehicles struggled to move through flooded areas. Public transport stations also became crowded as people sought shelter from the rain.

The heavy rainfall created safety risks for residents. Emergency teams rescued people trapped by rising water, while reports also described vehicles being swept away by floodwaters. A 14-year-old boy died after being electrocuted in a flooded street, according to local reports.

Istanbul’s governor ordered schools to remain closed on October 15 as a safety measure. Some public sector employees, including those with disabilities and mothers with young children, were also granted administrative leave. Authorities restricted motorcycles and similar two-wheeled vehicles from the roads due to dangerous conditions.
