Icon of the Seas: World’s Largest Cruise Ship Termed ‘Monstrosity’

The world’s largest cruise ship referred to as a ‘monstrosity’ by critics is scheduled for its inaugural trip in January 2024. The ship also called the Icon of the Seas will be operated by Royal Caribbean International.

The monstrosity surpasses the Titanic’s size by a factor of five with an internal volume of 250,800 gigatons (GT) compared to the Titanic’s 46,328 GT. According to Royal Caribbean International, the Icon of the Seas will revolutionize the experience of sea traveling and will position it as the ultimate family vacation.

The president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, Michael Bayley expressed his pleasure at the ship’s creation, highlighting the efforts and resources invested. The immense vessel features seven pools, nine whirlpools, and an impressive water part at sea named ‘Category 6’ due to its six slides.

The cruise consists of 19 floors and can accommodate approximately 5,610 passengers and 2,350 crew members. Its height reaches an equivalent to that of a building in New York City.

The massive cruise completed its first set of sea trials in June during which numerous aspects were determined including main engines, brake systems, hull, noise levels, steering, and vibrations. The cruise’s maiden voyage is anticipated with both skepticism and excitement as the world awaits its first journey.
