Imran Khan to Become First Pakistani PM to Visit Russia in Over Two Decades

Prime Minister Imran Khan will make his first visit to Russia in more than two decades. The last Pakistan Prime Minister to visit Russia was Nawaz Sharif who went to Moscow in 1999.

The Prime Minster is currently preparing to travel to that country for an official visit later this month. On Monday, Pakistan’s foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi announced the news.

Previously, during the Cold War, Pakistan and Russia had created a savage rivalry. It was following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. At the time, Pakistan’s Prime Minister supported the United States and assisted the Afghan resistance groups in their guerilla warfare.

However, Pakistan and Russia have recently tried to strengthen their ties. In 2014 after many decades, Russia removed a long-standing arms ban against Pakistan.
