Iqra University Faces Backlash Over Bold Fashion Show

Iqra University has faced backlash over its recent event, “Iqra University Fashion Odyssey 2024,” which highlighted bold Western-style fashion.

Organized in partnership with AIFD, the fashion show showcased the work of emerging designers and featured prominent models. However, many critics have expressed concern over the event, claiming that some of the outfits were too revealing and did not align with the university’s Islamic values.

The criticism has been amplified by the significance of the university’s name, “Iqra,” which is the first word revealed in the Quran. Opponents argue that hosting an event showcasing provocative fashion contradicts the institution’s supposed commitment to Islamic principles.

Many have accused the event organizers of promoting inappropriate trends and adopting Western styles without considering cultural norms and sensitivities. The show has sparked a broader debate about the growing influence of Western fashion on the younger generation in Pakistan.

Supporters of the event argue that it was meant to provide a platform for creativity and innovation in design. However, detractors feel that such displays send the wrong message and are not in line with the values expected from an institution of higher learning in a predominantly Muslim society.

The controversy has raised questions about the balance between fostering creativity and adhering to cultural and religious values, with many calling on educational institutions to prioritize cultural sensitivity in their events and initiatives.
