Karachi Monsoon Alert! 100% Increase in Monsoon Rains Expected This Year

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Sindh has issued a serious warning that Karachi is expected to experience over 100% more rainfall than usual during the upcoming monsoon season. This alarming forecast was discussed in a recent meeting led by Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi, where the city’s preparedness for heavy rains was a major focus.

The meeting highlighted a critical issue: Karachi’s drainage system is severely clogged, with 550 waste drains currently blocked. These blockages pose a significant risk of severe flooding if they are not cleared in time. The potential for significant damage is high, given the city’s existing drainage problems. Commissioner Naqvi stressed the urgent need for proactive measures to prevent a disaster.

Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah emphasized that all relevant departments must be on high alert and fully prepared for the monsoon season. He called for the immediate mobilization of emergency equipment and personnel to tackle any potential flooding and other rain-related emergencies.

The warning from PDMA underscores the urgent need for Karachi to take swift action to mitigate the impacts of the expected heavy rains. The city’s authorities are being urged to act quickly to clear the blocked drains and put in place effective flood prevention measures.

The alert serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of inadequate preparation for the monsoon season. With the forecast indicating a dramatic increase in rainfall, it is imperative that all necessary steps are taken to protect the city and its residents from the severe flooding that could result.
