The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has achieved its highest cargo-handling volume in its 138-year history, surpassing 54.685 million tonnes during the fiscal year. The new milestone has broken the previous record and reflects growing trade activity and improved port operations in Pakistan.
Karachi Port is one of the country’s busiest seaports and handles around 60% of Pakistan’s international trade. It plays a key role in importing essential goods such as petroleum products, machinery, chemicals, and food items, while also supporting exports including textiles, rice, and other products.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the government is continuing reforms to modernize the country’s ports, improve logistics, and strengthen Pakistan’s position as a regional maritime and trade hub. He added that better infrastructure and efficient port operations are important for supporting economic growth.
According to KPT officials, the record cargo handling was made possible by improved operational efficiency, better management, and smoother ship and cargo handling. Ongoing investments in modern equipment, digital systems, and port infrastructure have also helped increase capacity and reduce delays.
The achievement is expected to boost investor confidence, support international trade, and strengthen Pakistan’s maritime sector.
