Karachi University Caught Giving Passing Marks to 150 Failed Law Students

The University of Karachi is facing questions over the examination results of more than 150 LLB students who were initially declared unsuccessful but reportedly received passing marks after their answer scripts were reviewed.

The students were enrolled at SM Law College and Islamia Law College. The reported change in their results has raised concerns about the university’s examination procedures and whether the review was conducted according to the rules.

According to the reported regulations, students can request a recounting of their examination papers, but rechecking of answer scripts is not permitted. The distinction has become central to the controversy, as questions have emerged about the authority under which the students’ marks were revised.

The dean of the university’s law faculty defended the decision, arguing that the affected students had been treated unfairly. The defence suggests that the review was intended to address concerns about the original assessment and ensure that students received fair treatment.

However, the university’s examination controller denied that students who had failed were subsequently declared successful. The conflicting positions have added to uncertainty surrounding the matter and prompted questions about how the reported changes were made.

The controversy has brought attention to the importance of transparent examination systems, consistent application of academic regulations and clear procedures for handling students’ complaints about results.

Universities are expected to maintain reliable assessment processes so that students can trust the outcomes of their examinations. In cases involving changes to declared results, clear explanations of the review process can help address concerns and protect the credibility of academic institutions.

The matter has renewed calls for greater clarity regarding examination rules and accountability in the handling of student results at the University of Karachi.
