Hyderabad Airport is set for a major revival after remaining inactive for nearly 13 years, with authorities considering plans to upgrade the facility and restore its role in Pakistan’s aviation network.
The proposed development is aimed at turning the airport into an alternative landing facility for Karachi, Sukkur and Nawabshah, particularly during emergencies, poor weather conditions or situations that disrupt normal flight operations.
As part of the planned upgrade, the airport’s runway is expected to be extended from its existing 7,000 feet to around 11,500 feet. The longer runway would allow the airport to accommodate larger commercial aircraft, including Boeing 777s, significantly increasing its operational capacity.
Passenger facilities and other airport infrastructure are also expected to be improved to support the handling of commercial flights and provide better services for travelers.
The revival of Hyderabad Airport could also create opportunities for the restoration of domestic air services and the introduction of regional routes in the future.
With its strategic location in Sindh, the airport could potentially develop into an important regional aviation hub, providing an alternative to nearby airports and improving connectivity for Hyderabad and surrounding areas.
The airport last handled a commercial passenger flight in 2013, after which regular operations were suspended.
If the proposed rehabilitation and expansion plans move forward, the facility could once again become an important part of the country’s aviation infrastructure and provide additional capacity during periods of disruption at major airports.
