KP Plans M-1 Motorway BRT Service to Connect Four Major Cities

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is working on a proposal to launch a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) style service on the M-1 Motorway. The service is planned to improve public transport between Peshawar and four nearby cities and districts, including Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, and Charsadda.

Under the initial plan, buses would travel on the motorway and follow the model of Peshawar’s existing BRT system, with passengers picked up and dropped off at selected toll plazas. This could provide a faster and more organised travel option for thousands of daily commuters, including students, employees, and business travellers.

However, the project has not been approved for launch yet. The KP Transport Department plans to conduct a feasibility study before making a final decision.

What the feasibility study will decide

  • Final route and stops
  • Suitable locations for stations
  • Estimated project cost
  • Passenger demand
  • Technical and operational requirements
  • Overall feasibility of the service

If approved, the service could improve links between Peshawar and major population centres in KP while giving commuters an alternative to conventional intercity transport.
