Lahore High Court Restores Lieutenant General Munir Afsar as NADRA Chairman

On Tuesday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) reinstated Lieutenant General Munir Afsar as the Chairman of the National Database and Regulatory Authority (NADRA).

This decision came after a previous ruling by a single-member bench of the court had invalidated Afsar’s appointment, a move that the federal government, represented by the Attorney General, had challenged.

A two-member bench of the LHC, led by Justice Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal, reviewed the appeal and decided to overturn the earlier verdict, effectively restoring Afsar to his position. As part of the legal process, the court has issued notices to all respondents, requesting their official responses to the case.

Lieutenant General Munir Afsar was originally appointed as the Chairman of NADRA on October 2 of last year. His appointment was approved by the federal cabinet after being selected from a list of three candidates recommended by the Ministry of Interior.

The reinstatement marks a significant development in the leadership of NADRA, with Afsar set to resume his responsibilities as the head of the organization tasked with managing Pakistan’s national identity database. The court’s decision ensures continuity in the agency’s operations under Afsar’s leadership.
