List of All Presidents of Pakistan from 1947 to 2022

An elected president represents the people of Pakistan’s Islamic Republic, whose leader is the president. According to Pakistan’s constitution, the president is given the authority to dismiss the National Assembly, which would need a fresh election, and remove the prime minister from office.

Governing System

Since the passage of the 18th Constitutional amendment in 2010, Pakistan has returned to a parliamentary republic from a semi-presidential one. That arrangement gives the Prime Minister greater executive authority, while the President is relegated to a ceremonial role.

Senate, National Assembly, and Provincial Assemblies are all members of the Electoral College, which selects a president. Pakistan has had thirteen presidents since the position was created in 1956. It was created with the passage of Pakistan’s 1956 constitution and the election of Iskander Mirza as the country’s first president.

Pakistan was a dominion of a Commonwealth of Nations until 1956, and Queen Elizabeth II was the monarch of Pakistan during that time. There have also been two acting presidents in office for a brief amount of time in addition to these twelve.

Wasim Sajjad, one of them, held the position of acting president twice, in 1993 and 1997–98, although he did not serve in that capacity consecutively. The president may serve a maximum of five years in office. When a president’s term ends early or while the president is away, the Chairman of a Senate takes control.
