Pakistan is continuing to face serious environmental challenges as the country loses nearly 11,000 hectares of forest every year due to ongoing deforestation, according to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2026.
The report shows that Pakistan’s total forest area has declined to around 4.11 million hectares, which makes up only about 4.7% of the country’s total land area. Forest coverage remains limited compared to global standards, raising concerns about long-term environmental protection.
Among the different types of forests, coniferous forests represent the largest share, especially in northern regions.
Other major forest categories include scrub forests, riverine forests, mangrove forests, and planted forests. Each of these plays an important role in supporting ecosystems and protecting natural resources.
Deforestation is affecting biodiversity, water availability, and the livelihoods of communities that depend on forests. Experts warn that the continued loss of trees can increase the risks of soil erosion, extreme weather impacts, and damage to natural habitats.
The government has introduced several initiatives to improve forest coverage, including the Green Pakistan Program, which focuses on tree plantation, forest restoration, and environmental conservation. These efforts have helped in planting and regenerating billions of trees across different areas.
However, climate experts say that plantation efforts alone are not enough unless existing forests are protected. They stress the need for stronger monitoring, better enforcement of environmental regulations, and sustainable land management practices.
Forests are considered a key part of climate resilience because they help absorb carbon dioxide, regulate temperatures, protect water sources, and support wildlife. Their decline can create long-term challenges for future generations.
The latest figures highlight the urgent need for stronger conservation policies and public awareness. Protecting forests is not only an environmental responsibility but also essential for economic stability, climate protection, and sustainable development in Pakistan.
