Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to introduce dedicated motorcycle lanes on major roads across Lahore as part of a broader plan to improve traffic management and road safety.
The decision was taken during a meeting focused on addressing traffic congestion and improving the movement of vehicles and pedestrians across the provincial capital.
The chief minister also ordered stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, particularly for vehicles working under the Suthra Punjab Programme. The directive follows a fatal accident involving one of the programme’s vehicles that resulted in the death of a minor girl.
Authorities have been instructed to ensure that vehicles operating under government programmes follow traffic rules and safety requirements more carefully.
Maryam Nawaz also called for stronger enforcement of pedestrian rights, particularly at zebra crossings. To improve compliance, she approved the use of camera-based digital monitoring, with a pilot project planned for The Mall.
The technology-based approach is expected to help authorities identify traffic violations and improve enforcement without relying entirely on manual monitoring.
The meeting also addressed traffic congestion at several major points in Lahore. Directions were issued to improve traffic flow at Shahdara and Thokar Niaz Baig, two areas that regularly experience heavy traffic.
New traffic signals were also approved for Pine Avenue and Jati Umra Chowk to improve vehicle movement and road safety at these locations. The introduction of dedicated motorcycle lanes could provide two-wheeler riders with safer and more organised routes while helping separate motorcycles from other traffic.
With motorcycles forming a significant part of daily transportation in Lahore, dedicated lanes could also help reduce conflicts between different types of road users. The wider plan combines road infrastructure improvements with stricter enforcement and digital monitoring.
Authorities will now be responsible for implementing the approved measures and assessing their impact on traffic flow and road safety. The initiatives are aimed at creating a more organised transport system in Lahore while improving protection for motorists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.
